The popular Highland Jazz + Blues Festival has begun a search for a poster for the 2010 Highland Jazz + Blues Festival, scheduled for Highland’s historic Columbia Park on Saturday, November 13.

“There were between 7 - 8,000 people at the festival in 2009,” says HJ+B president Kenney Koonce, “and most of them wanted a festival poster or tee-shirt. Our ’09 poster was so popular we ran out of everything. We want our 2010 poster to be just as spectacular.”

“There is a tremendous amount of graphic and artistic talent in the area,” says Festival Organizer Amy Loe. “That’s why we wanted to open the contest up to everyone. We know there are going to be some great and very visual ideas out there and we’d like to see them.”

The winner of the contest will receive $250 and his or her work will be featured in a number of ways at the 2010 music fest. The artist will also be spotlighted. “We just love the idea of featuring a local artist at this local music event,” says Loe. “It’s what we’re all about.”

The deadline for submittal is March 1, and there are a few contest rules. The poster should incorporate some version of the Highland “Blues” bird of happiness (seen in the poster above) and should include details about the 2010 festival. Special consideration will be given to those artists who can come up with a “Lucky Seven” (this is the 7th year of the festival) theme. Specific details can be seen in the Call for Entries.

“Last year was our biggest year ever, in terms of participation, attendance and excitement,” says Koonce. “It was also the year that nearly ended us as the economy deteriorated and donations and grants tanked. So ‘Lucky 7’ has real meaning to us.”
